Coharie Tribal Community Garden
The Coharie Indian Tribe is a state-recognized Tribe located in the southeastern region of the State of North Carolina, in the counties of Harnett and Sampson. To serve its members and promote food access, the Coharie IntraTribal Council currently hosts several programs and initiatives to support the health and wellness, community development, and cultural vitality of their tribe. Once such initiative is the Coharie Community Gardens, with the goal of serving the members of the tribe and community by practicing cultural traditions of growing food and sharing it widely among community members, making particular effort to reach their elders and those in the community who otherwise wouldn’t have access to fresh, healthy, cultural food. This effort is in conjunction with their many other cultural healthy lifestyles offerings, recognizing the wellness and medicine found in the garden, in being on the river, and in community.
